On 285, south of Vaughn, New Mexico.

It's a good four and a half to five hours' drive from Santa Fe down to Carlsbad. In some parts the mountains are stunning, but eventually you find yourself in a long span of immense flatness, and you just have to stop, breathe, and take it in.
