See, the women... they got these... POWERS!

Of all that Samuel Johnson wrote or said, these words of consolation to a friend going through divorce could well be my least favorite (FAR below the dog walking on hind legs quip):

"Nature has given women so much power that the law has very wisely given them little."

I'd really like to do the follow up questions on that one. But since he's been dead over 200 years, we may have to content ourselves with grilling Todd Akin, currently running for US Senate against Claire McCaskill. Akin, a Republican, is against abortion even in the case of rape, and defended his stance by claiming it was unnecessary, because, well, you know, women who are raped got these POWERS!

"First of all, from what I understand from doctors, (pregnancy from rape) is really rare," Akin told KTVI-TV in a clip posted to YouTube by the Democratic super PAC American Bridge. "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

Although we know that the McCaskill campaign worked to make Akin her opponent over other rivals, credit goes beyond the McCaskill campaign. Every single person who voted for Akin over his rivals deserves some credit here too. But how has Akin reacted to the furor following his comment? Well, his office issued a "clarifying statement" which, as you might expect, says nothing about Akin's blockheadedness, one that only restates his feelings about abortion and his take on McCaskill's position. As in, ignore what I said, let's talk about this instead.

If there is lemonade in this lemon, let's ask him how he feels about the unnecessary voter ID laws. Just for jollies.
