Why the Mosque shouldn't move. You know the one I mean - - so close to the OTB parlor, I'm tempted to start calling it The OTB Mosque - - shouldn't move, for one very simple reason. They want it there. You may disagree with their wisdom, and wish that they were as all-seeing and as sensitive as you are. But that's different. They want it there, they have the right, end of story. Howard Dean is among those who think it should move; he says that without a dialog is won't bridge gaps, but let's be serious, if the community backs down there's going to be way too much of a feeling of triumph, some kind of Iwo Jima mood among the haters. No dialog.

But give the community center time in their midst, and it will be different. The daily contact wil wear down the resistance, bit by bit; at this point they're just the "others," easily kept in a pigeon hole. If they move there will be no bridges built.

Look, he's not a Muslim. Get over it. A new result from Pew finds that 18% of Americans think Obama is a Muslim. It's really sad, seeing as how Obama has said he's not; there is no evidence which will satisfy those who hold to their mistaken beliefs, and even if Obama were to close every parapgraph with "thank you, Jesus" they'd think it was all for show. Obama simply cannot come out ahead on this.

And then there are the wing nuts (this one's for Joel) who sneer at the AP for categorizing the belief as "incorrect":

I love that "incorrectly." The AP has evolved into an opinion machine, so it's rare and a little startling to see it stand up so boldly for a "fact." He's not a Muslim, dammit!

Well, it is a fact, and to act as if it's not a fact, that it is an open question, shows you to be an extremist. Perhaps not a violent one, but an extremist nonetheless. Such an excess of stupidity is not to be found in nature, and all that.

So what's up with the hotel TV? The Best Western in Ludlow, VT. Vermont has one senator who's a Democrat, and the other, a socialist, is an independent. And Vermont has a "blue" state to its west (NY), a blue state to its south (MA), and a blue state to its double south (CT). New Hampshire is conservative, but that won't disrupt the punch line. Vermont also leads the nation in terms of local food concumption. It is, by any measure, a liberal state.

So what's the TV line-up in the Best Western hotel? Well, there's CNN, but that's the most liberal offering you'll find (and we know how liberal CNN is). No MSNBC, but they do offer Fox News. They can't squeeze in MSNBC??

(They also don't provide ESPN, so maybe there's a technological limitation... But to opt for Fox instead of MSNBC, given the leanings of the surrounding areas? As if they get a lot of people from Alabama or Oklahoma? I don't get it.)

OK, I'm back. Greene Columbia County (NY) and Vermont. Limited opportunities for posting during that time, and the photo software I bought for the laptop overtaxed the hardware (I could do nothing with the shots I took). I'll load a new picture for you later tonight. (Had a good time.)

Speak English! Amidst my chaotic efforts to map out extended travel plans for the next week or so, I think I should point out that ONE of our Presidents didn't speak English as his first language. Yes, it's true, and I can only imagine the "show me your papers" confrontation with the POTUS, who had to learn English. Yes. They're out there, they take on our ways, and they infiltrate the highest levels of government. I mean, once you become a citizen, and learn the language, it's a snap, right?

Martin Van Buren. Yes, technically New York is one of the United States, but since New Yorkers are so out of touch with mainstream American values (so much more so than those who live in heartland states like Alaska) can you really count on them? And the more so with someone who didn't even grow up speaking English? I mean, sure, he could probably make poffertjes, but does that make him fit to bus tables or take care of our children? Who cares that he was a US Senator, the Governor of NY, the Secretary of State, the Vice President, and the President! He learned English, it wasn't in his genes!

He probably spent his teenage years listening to Golden Earring and Focus.

Give. Me. Back. My. Country.

(Now name the five American Presidents not buried on American soil.)

It helps if you're a Kate Bush listener. It helps a lot. If you're not, click at your own risk. And if you are? Click at your own risk.

Yeah, it's a silly thing to post, but I feel a little silly because Ab and I are about to go away together. Not tonight, not tomorrow, but in a couple days. If the inns we're in have wi-fi I'll post and load pictures. But if there are gaps, I'm sure you'll understand.

And the giddiness is cos, well, we haven't been off together since the Zoester was in summer camp. (Go through the photos and see if you can figure out how long ago that was.)
